Jump Cafe and Bar is a hopping place for business meals and networking.
Since it opened in 1993, Jump has lived up to its name with its busy, upbeat vibe. Its success has led the partners, Peter Oliver and Michael Bonacini, to open two other restaurants in the financial district: Biff’s Bistro and Canoe.
Jump is classy and artistic with glass atrium ceilings and dark wooden tables, giving it a traditional décor with an urban contemporary twist.
Shortly after 6 p.m., business men and women filled the restaurant. The tables became flooded with popular entrees such as the Roasted Duck Confit and the Seared Tuna with Blood Oranges. The plate arrangements for the food were creative and well thought out, just like the décor.
I began my meal with a complimentary appetizer of sourdough bread served with a roasted tomato, red pepper, olive oil and garlic dip. It was delicious and savoury. The waiter also served a small shot of purified tomato water with a chiffonade of basil; it was unique and refreshing.
Following the appetizer, I ordered Duck Confit and Maple Smoked Cheddar Poutine. With smooth gravy, melted cheddar, thin pieces of slow-roasted duck and cranberry sauce, it’s the most extravagant poutine you’ll ever eat and it’s only $7.95.
Though the place is young and fresh, it’s not very affordable for the average student. Jump is a networking space for young professionals in the working world. Popular dishes such as the Mixed Grill of Market Fresh Seafood cost $36 and the common Blue Plate Special, where you have a choice between three appetizers, three main meals and three desserts, costs $35.
Although the prices are a little steep, it’s worthwhile paying Jump a visit, and the service was exceptional. The staff were polite and professional; they regularly checked on their customers and cleared plates properly, waiting for everyone at the table to finish.
For dessert, I ordered the White Chocolate Cheesecake, double baked in phyllo with biscotti crust, for $9. Some other delectable desserts on the menu were the Dark Chocolate Semifreddo Hazelnut Snap, Drunken Strawberries and Sweet Vanilla Cream and the Ste. Honore Cheese. My cheesecake was warm and mouth-watering and I would absolutely come back just for that.
Overall, the food was delicious, the service was great and the decor was immaculate. The restaurant is a great place for business professionals to relax and network. I would eat there again for a special occasion, but it’s generally a bit pricey for the average student’s budget.
